New in the app: clearer insights into charging speed

Understanding how fast you can charge your EV just got easier.
We’ve introduced a new Charging Speed feature in the Chargefox app, giving drivers clearer, real-world insights into how stations are performing before they plug in.
Know what to expect before you arrive
Charging speed can vary based on a range of factors and we know how important it is to give you all the information you need to make an informed choice about where you charge.
With this update, you’ll now see a question mark icon next to a station’s charging speed. Tap it to open a detailed view that goes beyond the listed charging speed to provide real world information on what charging speed you can expect.
Inside, you’ll find:
- Charging speeds experienced by drivers over the past 7 days
- The maximum speed recorded at that station during that period
- Whether charging speed is shared across chargers
This gives you a clearer picture of how a station is actually performing — not just what it’s rated for.

More transparency = better charging decisions
To ensure accuracy, we only show this data when there have been at least five successful charging sessions at a station over the past week. This helps provide a reliable snapshot of recent performance.
The feature is currently available on Chargefox-hosted stations, not yet at our roaming partners.
Understanding shared charging
The new view also highlights when a station is shared.
At some DC fast charging sites, power is split between multiple vehicles when they’re charging at the same time. This can result in lower charging speeds for each driver.
We’ve made this easier to spot, so you can make informed decisions and plan your charging stops more effectively.
What affects how fast you charge?
Charging speed isn’t fixed at what the listed speed says — it can vary depending on a number of factors including:
- Vehicle capability — each EV has its own maximum charging rate, which limits how fast it can charge. Check your car's maximum speed for AC and DC charging so you know what's possible
- Battery level (state of charge) — charging typically slows as the battery fills, and often drops dramatically after reaching 80%
- Shared charger power — at some stations, power is split between vehicles using the same charger, so speeds can drop when more people are charging
- Site-wide energy demand — at some locations, total power is shared across the entire site (including buildings, businesses, and infrastructure), which can reduce charging speed during peak usage times
- Battery temperature and environmental conditions — very hot or cold batteries and weather extremes can reduce charging performance
Understanding these variables helps explain why the speed you receive may differ from the advertised maximum.
